AREAS OF PRACTICE
Scott Cordell is seasoned and well-respected insurance and commercial litigation counsel in British Columbia, having practiced almost exclusively in these areas for approximately 30 years.
After graduating from Queen’s law school in 1994, Scott was called to the bar in BC in 1995 and began practicing at what was then one of the largest insurance defence firms in BC, Killam, Whitelaw & Twining. In 1999, Scott and James Killam, K.C. left the “old firm” to start their own – Killam Cordell – which has gone on to become one of the pre-eminent litigation boutiques in BC.
Scott has extensive experience in the defence of professionals, including lawyers, engineers, architects, real estate brokerages and agents, property managers, geoscientists, accountants, and hospital staff, among others. He also has significant experience in matters related to coverage and complex commercial litigation. He has arbitrated coverage matters and acted in D&O cases. Having acted as counsel during the “leaky condo” crisis in BC, he has been involved in hundreds of mediations.
Scott’s clients appreciate his thorough detailed-oriented approach, high-quality advice, and knack for coming up with practical and creative resolutions to complex problems. Since 2018, Scott has been recognized by Best Lawyers as a Leader in the areas of Insurance Law, Legal Malpractice Law and Professional Malpractice Law.
Scott also has an engineering degree (B.E.Sc. – Mechanical) and was licenced as a professional engineer (P.Eng.) in Ontario. Before moving into law, he had significant experience in electrical and software engineering. He was employed for approximately 3 years by IBM as a software engineer.
When not practicing law, Scott enjoys spending time with his family and in the Pacific outdoors – on his sailboat in the summer and on the mountain in the winter. Scott gives back to his community as a founder and director of the National Mogul Training Centre (BC) Society, which developed and maintains an elite freestyle ski training and competition facility on Blackcomb Mountain.
